Update the password stored in Outlook

Outlook for WindowsOutlook for Mac

To update your password in Outlook, use the following steps.

Note: Outlook can't change the password with your email provider. In other words, if you forget your Outlook.com password, you'll first have to see the section Change your Outlook.com password to change the password Outlook.com has for your account, then update the password in Outlook for Windows.

There are two possible ways to update your password in Outlook. The specific steps you need to take depend on your version of Outlook and whether you're an Office 365 subscriber or purchased Outlook as a standalone application.

If you're an Office 365 subscriber with monthly updates, use the following steps:

  1. In Outlook, choose File > Account Settings > Update Password.

  2. Update the password or app password and click OK.

If you're an Office 365 subscriber with semi-annual updates or you have Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, or 2010, or purchased Outlook as a standalone application, use the following steps:

  1. In Outlook, choose File > Account Settings > Account Settings.

  2. Select the email account you want to change, and then choose Change.

Before you type in the passcode again, and again, and again, navigate to the preferences window again and click on the little gear there at the bottom. Use ps3 controller on mac usb. Make one up, or use the standard ‘0000’ to make the passcode dialog box disappear. It’ll come back up again. Leave it plugged into the Mac; you’ll need it in a moment. The red LED lights will start to flash faster, and your Mac will ask for a passcode.

  3. In the Change Account window, update your password.

    1. NOTE: POP and IMAP accounts will not provide this option if your entry point is File > Account Settings > Account Settings. If that is the case go to File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles, Select Emails Accounts, then select the email account you want to change, and then choose Change. In the Change Account window, update your password.

  4. Select Close after Outlook tests your account settings, then Finish > Close to return to Outlook.

Does my email account need an app password?

If you use Outlook to send and receive email from your Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, Apple, Outlook.com, or @me.com accounts, you may not use your regular email account password to set up these accounts. These email providers may require you to use two-factor authentication and an app password. This is a one-time password that you enter in place of your regular account password when setting up your account for the first time.

For more information, see the sections on setting up two-factor authentication for Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud.

To update your password in Outlook for Mac, use the following steps.

  1. On the Tools tab, select Accounts.

  2. In the left pane, select the account you want to change the password for.

  3. In the right pane, enter a new password in the Password box.

  4. Close the Accounts window. Outlook will save the password automatically.

Once you've set up your account in Mail for Windows 10, you don't have to enter your password every time you open the app. If the password for your email account expires or you change it for security purposes, you may need to update your password in the Mail app.

Update a password

Microsoft Store Password Reset

If you've changed your password with your email provider, you can update the stored password in Mail for Windows 10.

  1. Choose Settings > Manage Accounts, and then choose the account you need to update.

  2. If you selected an Outlook.com account, you can change or update your password by choosing Change account settings. Mail for Windows 10 will take you to a webpage for your account where you can change your password. After you update the password on the webpage, Mail for Windows 10 will receive that change automatically.

For all other accounts, after you update your password with your email provider, you can update the password in the Account Settings dialog box and then choose Save.

    Tips:

    • If your password has expired or you think your account has been compromised, you'll need to change your password with your email service provider—€for example, Gmail or iCloud—€before you update the password in the Account Settings dialog box.

    • If Mail for Windows 10 won't accept your new password, make sure Caps Lock is turned off, and then reenter your password.
